Wednesday 14th May 2008                                           Pentecost Term

Our RE topic is Pentecost

“To the greater glory of God”

Educating our children for life as Christians in the community; Jesus and His teachings are central to all we do.

Text Box: Summer Fete Saturday 28th June 11am-2pm
Thank you for all your generous donations last week, Miss Oke’s class was the winner. This week we are collecting groceries. Please, please could we have a few more offers of help, it makes it so much easier if the load can be spread and the benefit to the children is huge.

First Holy Communion
Saturday saw the first of the celebrations of First Holy Communion at St Joseph’s, the second was on Sunday (St Edmund Campion) and the third is next Saturday (St Joseph’s). Congratulations to all the children and their families. It was wonderful to share in such a happy occasion and the children were fantastic. Thank you to everyone who helped to prepare the children or participated in any way.

Summer Uniform
The class councils are sending representatives to the School Council meeting to discuss summer uniform. Currently the boys wear polo shirts and trousers\shorts and the girls wear the blue and white check summer dresses. There are a wide range of styles available. Some parents have raised the issue of year 6 girls needing new dresses and only having a few months wear from them and the children are to consider this. Please note all children should now be in their summer uniform.

School Lunches
Next week is week 1 of the new menu.
We now have our new flight plates so the juniors are able to eat lunch outdoors if they wish. The infants are eating inside as a whole hour out in the hot sun, even with a hat and sun block, is not sensible. Next week for Vegetarian Week there are some special dishes available for the vegetarian option.

SATs Week
This week the year 2, 3, 4 and 6 are having their tests. Please do continue to reassure your children that they just need to do their best. Tests give a snap shot of a child’s progress and are only a part of the picture; no child does their best when they are worried and stressed. Test results will be included as part of the annual report in July.
The year 5 children are sitting their tests next week when year 6 is at PGL.

Lost Property
At the end of last week the lost property bin contained :- ten hats, two pairs of PE shorts, one pair of trousers, one shirt and 13 jumpers or cardigans as well as a wide range of assorted pieces of clothing all unnamed. Please, please name all items in indelible pen or with a name tape and, if you have lost an article of clothing, come and take a replacement. The jumpers alone are worth more than £150 and it is such a waste. If they are named we can return them to their rightful owner.
Please also check that the jumpers your child has have their name in – a few named jumpers and hats have also gone missing.

Holiday Absence in Term Time
We have had a recent rise in the number of requests for holiday in term time. The school does not authorize any absence except in exceptional circumstances. It is your right to take your children away but it is important that parents accept the responsibility for reducing the impact it has on their child’s education.
Often absence is an issue when illness, holiday and other odd days combine. The Education Welfare Officer for the Borough comes in each term and questions attendance when it is below 95% and in the vast majority of cases is satisfied with the reasons especially if it unusual for the child. If she needs further information she will either write or arrange an appointment with parents or carers.
