St Mary’s Catholic Primary School

Wednesday 1st July 2009                 Summer Term             Next week is Faith & Culture Week

“To the greater glory of God”

Educating our children for life as Christians in the community; Jesus and His teachings are central to all we do.

Fete  - Thank you very, very much to everyone for making the fete such a success. We were blessed with beautiful weather and children, families, governors and staff who worked really hard all day – and in many cases for weeks beforehand. A special thank you to Miss Oke who orchestrates the whole event.

Modern Foreign Languages Extravaganza at Cox Green - Very well done to Miss Penfold’s class who took part in this event last Wednesday afternoon, I have it on good authority that they were the best there in appearance, behaviour and performance. Thank you so much to the children and also to Miss Penfold, Mrs Fowles and Miss Wallis who organised this and took the children along. Thank you too to Mrs Sutton from Desborough School for her French teaching in years 5 and 6 this year. We were also entertained on Monday by the class who showed us the Spanish they have been learning with Miss Wallis. They even sang the Macarena in Spanish, with actions! Fantastic work by everyone and thank you to Miss Wallis.

FOSM Summer Ball – Saturday 4th July 8pm-midnight  - Tickets are £25 per person for this lovely evening. Please see Vicki Hazel if you are able to come along and join us.

Help – unnamed lost property is again threatening to overwhelm us!! Has anyone taken home a swimming kit bag by mistake containing towel, flip-flops etc. could you return please to school

Class Coffee Mornings - On Monday, Tuesday and today we had the class coffee mornings. It was lovely to see so many parents and family members. There really is no catch – just come along and share a short time with your child and then have a coffee (or tea) with other parents. Friday 3rd July Miss Oke’s, Miss Hague’s and Miss Penfold’s classes, please do try to come along if you are able.

Obstruction of the Bus Stop - I have received the following from one of our neighbours –

On several occasions recently, it has been impossible for the local bus to access the bus stop lay-by at Cookham Road/Aldebury Road due to the large number of cars using it as a parking space while collecting their children in the afternoon.  Many of the passengers are elderly and have to alight directly into the road due to the selfishness of the parents. Please do not park in such a way that the bus cannot access the bus stop. It is better to park slightly further away than cause an accident. The new crossing will enable safe parking in Sandringham Way and safe passage across the road which I hope will reduce the number of cars on the main road.

Please drive with care - We were informed by a parent that on Tuesday morning a car was driven round the turning circle while the driver was on his mobile phone. This is not only illegal it is unsafe. Please do drive as safely as you can especially when in the vicinity of the school.

The idea is that when you bring your child to school you stay for wake up and shake up (weather permitting) and then spend 15 minutes in class with your child. The children can show you the displays and talk about what they are doing in class at the moment. The children will then continue with the timetable and you may go to the hall for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat with other parents before you go on with your day. These are not occasions for talking to the staff about your child but a chance for your child to share what they are doing in school with you. There is no catch! Special mention To all of year 5 who did such a fantastic job of covering the year 6 duties when year 6 were away at PGL. Thank you.

Corpus Christi Mass – a special celebration On Thursday we celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi with a special Mass in school where our First Holy Communion children wore their clothes from their special Saturday. We were all able to share such an important event in their lives; thank you to everyone who made the Mass so special. It was lovely to see so many friends and family in school.

We had another reason to celebrate too – Mgr. Tom celebrated the ruby anniversary of his ordination (40 years as a priest). We are so very blessed to have Mgr. Tom as our parish priest. Even though he is very busy he always finds time for us.

Fete – Saturday 27th June 11am-2pm - Thank you for all the super donations. Last week Miss Hester’s class brought in the most items. Last year someone kindly provided a gas barbeque for the day to supplement the school one and it was very useful. Unfortunately it is not available this year – does anyone else have one that the barbeque team can borrow?  Please contact Miss Oke or leave a message through the office. Please could raffle tickets be returned as soon as possible Helpers - We still need more helpers to set up, man the stalls and clear up afterwards. Please, please if you can spare even just an hour do offer. It is a very enjoyable event and a good chance to get to know others in the school. Bottle mufti this Friday – come out of uniform and bring a bottle for the bottle stall.

FOSM - Please see the attached information and order form for tickets for the disco on Thursday 9th July (Friday 10th is an INSET day). Infants are from 5-6.30pm and Juniors 6.45-8.15pm; tickets are £3.50. It is essential that sufficient adults are present, if you can help please do offer.

Summer Ball Update (please see attached blue flyer) Less than three weeks to go and things are hotting up for the Ball. Really glad so many of you are interested already!  We need to borrow standard size Scalextric track and cars (it will only be used by adults on the night - please label the back if you want this returned).  Also need to get some good prizes for the auction - if you know anyone in industry (car-related preferably) could you please ask if they could donate their service/products etc for a mention. Last time the big prizes included week in a caravan and a four wheel drive day for two. Thanks.  There are still tickets for sale. A Visit to Wimbledon - We are very proud of three of our pupils (Oliver, Oliver and Janneta) who, because of their good performance and hard work have been chosen by Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club to visit Wimbledon for the day during the first week of the Championships. Only six children have been chosen from the club so we are very well represented. Both Oliver Okonkwo and Oliver Hills have been having extra County training - British tennis really is on the rise!!

Uniform - Just a reminder that all children should be in summer uniform – no ties and socks should be white or grey\black and not patterned. Earrings are again causing difficulties in PE lessons.  We ask that children remove earrings to avoid the possibility of them catching on clothing and equipment and tearing the ears. An increasing number of children cannot remove their own earrings and staff are not permitted to do so. Please ensure that either your child does not  wear earrings on PE days or can remove their own earrings. If ears are to be newly pierced please wait until the start of the long summer break as this gives them time to heal and means they do not have to cover them with tape for PE. Studs should be small and plain please.

Summer Fete Saturday 27th June 11am-2pm  - Our fantastic summer fete is drawing closer. It is such an enjoyable event for the whole community and has the added bonus of raising funds for the children’s use. The barbeque team are already planning their delicious food and the 100 squares and raffle have brilliant prizes. Thank you so much for your generosity so far, sending in groceries, toys and tombola items. This week we are collecting groceries and next week - Bottle Mufti Friday 19th June– children come out of uniform and bring a bottle for the bottle stall. If you are worried about glass bottles with the younger children please hand them directly to the class teacher. The class donating the most items each week receives an extra break. In addition the three classes who have donated the most during the 6 weeks will win a cinema visit. Help! Thank you very much to the 12 parents who have offered to help but we do need more. There are more than 180 families in the school and if you can give just an hour or two between 10am-3pm it would be very much appreciated. The money raised is used directly for the children – paying for theatre groups, extra special resources for art – in so many ways! Please be generous with your time and come along on the day to support; if you are able to help please contact Miss Oke or leave a message at the office. With the letter this week is a book of raffle tickets for the Summer raffle. Please note that tickets are £1 each.

Infant Golf Taster Session - All the Infants enjoyed playing golf last week during our Health & Eco-week. Each child will have brought home a certificate. As part of the taster families may visit the website at www.thegolfman.co.uk and find details of a free coaching lesson for their child at Birds Hill Golf Centre. This is on the certificate but does not stress that all the children who took part may have the extra lesson if parents wish to organise it.

Congratulations to ……the Cole family on the safe arrival of Cody. I know that Bradley, Chloe and Katie are very excited about their new brother.

School Building Fund - Thank you to all the parents who have supported the fund in full this year. Some families are due to make their summer contribution, whilst others have made no donations at all yet. The final appeal for this academic year will be sent out with the children this week. Please do contribute if you can – we are fortunate to be planning a new three classroom block to open in September 2010. As a Voluntary Aided school we cannot fund such a project without raising the first 10% through the Diocesan School Building Fund.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Swimming - We are very fortunate to have a fantastic heated school pool and we are able to fulfill the requirements of the National Curriculum without the inconvenience of visiting a local sports centre. Other local schools request a contribution towards the costs of swimming lessons too! At this time of year each child, weather permitting, uses the pool at least twice each week and gains confidence in the water. It is wonderful to see a reticent child splashing about and laughing by the end of a lesson. The lessons are looked forward to as a real treat by the children. Please ensure your child has their kit in school for their swimming days as, if they are in school, they must take part:-

Mrs Thomas – Wed. & Friday  Mrs Hurrell – Tuesday & Wednesday

Miss Gartland – Mon. & Wed. Mr Errington – Tuesday & Thursday

Mrs Farrington-King\Mrs Tempest – Tues. & Thursday

Miss Hester – Mon. & Friday               Miss McDonald – Tuesday & Thursday

Miss Hague – Mon. & Friday               Miss Oke – Monday & Tuesday

Miss Penfold – Wednesday & Friday

If any changes have to be made in a week the children will be informed.

St Mary’s Pool Club - Attached is a Pool Club letter detailing how you, as a family, can use the pool from now until September at a very small cost compared to the Magnet. Please do use the pool it is a wonderful way to meet with friends and enable the children to be occupied and exercising.

Attention all swimming pool supervisors - Jan will be in the school library between 3-4pm on Thursday 4th June (tomorrow). Please come along and sign up for two dates when you are available to open up and supervise the pool.

There will also be an opportunity to buy your pool ticket and collect your keys

Fete - This week we are collecting grocery items. The winners of the extra break for the week before the holiday were Miss Hester’s class. Well done. Thank you to those who have offered help – any more please? Please be generous and contact Miss Oke with your availability.

First Holy Communion - I am full of contrition as I mistakenly missed Adam Wilson from the list of First Holy Communicants. I did see him and his family on the day and I know they had a wonderful time. They did not even mention my omission, it only came to light through another route; my apologies.

All the children who have made their First Holy Communion this May will be able to celebrate, as they did on the day, with the whole school at our Corpus Christi Mass on 11th June at 11am.

Please remember the final lesson of the programme will be on Sunday 7th June at 9.30 a.m. followed by family Mass.  The children can wear their special clothes and there will be refreshments in St. Joseph’s Hall after Mass.

PGL Residential - Thank you to Miss Hague, Miss Oke and Mrs Jones for accompanying year 6 to PGL, Shrewsbury. It is a huge responsibility and the care of a whole year group for 24 hours a day, even though our children are usually well-behaved, is very generous of them. I know they do enjoy supporting and encouraging the children during the week but, like the children, were in need of the week’s rest when they returned.

Thank you to parents and families for enabling the children to go.

Music Concert  - There will be a Music Concert on Friday 3rd July and if any children are interested in participating there will be auditions at lunchtime Thursday 4th June for Year 6 and infants in Miss Gartland’s classroom. The other children had their auditions before the holiday.

Well Done to Years 3 & 4 - again - On the Thursday before the holidays years 3 & 4 walked down to the church for 10am Mass. They were beautifully behaved and their presence was welcomed and enjoyed by Mgr. Tom and the parish congregation. It is planned that other year groups will visit the church in future months.

Free School Meals -  If a family fulfils certain criteria free school meals are an entitlement. As many families pay in a variety of ways, including monthly in advance, there is no reason not to claim if you are able. The children do not need to have lunch every day but they may if they wish.
